David Cage Doesn’t Want a Sequel to Heavy Rain, Wants to Create New Experiences

Say what you will about Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain and how its success paves the way for more “artistic” games (we’ve said a lot about the same). But one thing that can’t be denied is that it was heavily criticized for its story and other mechanics.

Speaking to Kotaku, director David Cage was asked if he was taking any of those criticisms and working on fixing them for Beyond: Two Souls, his next game for PS3. Cage responded, “You never design in reaction to critiques otherwise you create a product.

“I’m not creating products. I’m trying to create experiences. I try to be sincere in what I’m doing. Yeah, we heard a lot of good things. We heard a couple of bad things. Good, let’s move on. Let’s try to do something better next time and maybe something else totally different.

“The only thing I didn’t want to do was a sequel to Heavy Rain. Like, ‘Oh let’s just do the same thing. Fix a couple of things here and there and just release the same game pretty much.’ We started from a blank page (for Beyond: Two Souls) and we tried to create an experience that would be different, that would play differently.”

Whether you like the man or not, you have to hand it to him: He takes his licks like a man, and wants to keep moving forward with something new. Beyond: Two Souls, by the by, will release on PlayStation 3 on October 8th.
