One of the most common complaints of Japanese RPGs has been random encounters. Some games have different ways of dealing with the situation – some allowing you to bypass them, while others letting you get the drop on foes – but Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII proposes a different solution: Kill them all.

In a recent Famitsu interview, translated by Gematsu, it’s been revealed that the number of monsters is fixed. As you exterminate monsters, you’ll come across the Last One of the species which will be the toughest of the lot and drop rare loot when killed. You’ll also get better abilities and rare items at higher difficulties when taking on the Last Ones.

Will that keep the excitement level higher when you don’t have to bash monsters every few minutes? Or will the doomsday clock cause you to prioritize? We’ll find out when Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII releases on February 12th 2014 in North America and February 14th 2014 in Europe for Xbox 360 and PS3.
