Tom Clancy’s The Division “Grounded in Reality” Compared to Destiny

Black Friday parallels also discussed by developer.

The Division

You’ve gotten your hands on the closed alpha (lucky you) for Tom Clancy’s The Division and you’re convinced this is your next big MMORPG/loot shooter fix. That being said, there’s still the current big player in the market – Bungie’s Destiny – to think about. How does Ubisoft feel about comparisons to Destiny? IP developer Martin Hultberg said it’s about the setting as much as anything else.

Speaking to GamesTM, Hultberg stated that, “The fact that our scenario is grounded in reality, an actual ‘what if’ scenario, sets us apart from most other games. We have no aliens, no zombies or strange monsters running about. The Division is based on a real threat, a clear and present danger to our society,”

Hultberg also offered some very interesting parallels to Black Friday in The Division. It’s certainly not all that ironic that the collapse of the United States started on Black Friday in the game. “There certainly is a thought in The Division about modern society. When we started looking at footage from Black Friday sales and viewed that next to footage from food riots in disaster areas around the world – there was an eerie resemblance in how people acted. There are reports of fights breaking out over game controllers on discount in the Christmas shopping frenzy. It’s crazy.”

All of this will hopefully add up to a decent alternative to Destiny, especially since Bungie is shifting towards more of an event-based model rather than releasing any new paid DLC. Tom Clancy’s The Division is out this March for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
