Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (try saying that 10 times fast) may have had its trailer leaked early, thus showcasing the kind of story and setting we’re in for, but the developer was discussing the level of change coming to the franchise in a “Call of Duty Heritage” video that released yesterday.

Design director Jacob Minkoff says “I want people to play our new game and say, ‘Wow, I haven’t seen CoD change that much since [Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare],” echoing sentiments made by Activision when it referred to the then-unnamed Call of Duty as “innovative”.

Art director Brian Horton, who worked on Rise of the Tomb Raider, also noted that with the new game “I see a new level of storytelling coming to this franchise.”

Time will tell of course. Remember when Treyarch said the story of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 wasn’t hard to understand and noted that “we send you up and along the way, we untangle a huge weavy story; a very deep, very dark, and sometimes really twisted narrative experience”?

The end result turned out to be one of the more confusing and ambiguous stories in the franchise yet. Hopefully Call of Duty Infinite Warfare can avoid that while still standing out.
