The Witcher 3 was the best game last year, stands as one of the best games ever made, and managed to be elevated even further with its two excellent expansions. Everything about that game was top notch- so it is a bit of a shame that CD Projekt RED will be losing one of the people who made the game what it is. Damien Monnier, senior gameplay designer with CD Projekt RED, has announced he will be departing the studio.

The departure seems to be amicable, albeit it does not sound like Monnier has much of an explanation for why he left. “I have no idea yet but it has to be an exciting project and a cool company – we’ll see!” he said to Eurogamer. Meanwhile, CD Projekt RED wished him luck.

“Damien was part of the duo that designed the mini-game gamers know from Wild Hunt, and he did play an important role in making standalone Gwent happen. However, it’s worth remembering that this game is being developed by a team that is more than a few dozen strong, with quite a lot of designers on board. We have a precise roadmap for Gwent and that has not changed at all.

“As for Damien moving,” global communication manager Michal Platkow-Gilewski added, “both parties agreed to part ways. Suffice to say, Damien has a lot of friends and people who will definitely miss him here in the studio, me included.”

Damien was also heading the upcoming Gwent game, which, it seems, remains in capable hands. Gwent is set to launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
