Square Enix Withdrawing From Hitman Developer IO Interactive

The shocking move puts the Hitman series in doubt.

IO Interactive will no longer be in charge of the Hitman series as Square Enix announces its withdrawal from the studio in a recent note to investors. Square Enix is currently talking to investors who can purchase the studio.

The publisher said that, “To maximise player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward, we are focusing our resources and energies on key franchises and studios.”

Actually going into effect from March 31st onwards, the withdrawal is likely why IO Interactive hasn’t offered any new information on the promised second season of Hitman. Square Enix will still retain the rights to the IP but for now, the current Hitman’s future is in doubt.

Square Enix has been working with IO Interactive and the Hitman series since purchasing Eidos Interactive in 2009. It hasn’t offered any information on the future of the series. What are your thoughts on this recent development? Let us know in the comments below.
