Fallout 76

The dust has settled on Bethesda’s reveal of Fallout 76. With the teaser trailer released, the only thing we really know is that the game will feature Vault 76 in some capacity (and by extension, the Capital Wasteland). However, it seems that this won’t be just a traditional single-player Fallout title.

According to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier who spoke to three anonymous people familiar with the game, Fallout 76 is actually an online survival RPG. Its inspirations include DayZ and Rust, thus making this a truly new direction for the franchise. The game was originally prototyped as Fallout 4’s multiplayer version but has evolved considerably over time.

There will be a story and quests, base-building, and multiplayer mechanics. Interestingly enough, one of the sources said that the gameplay is “rapidly changing” much like it does in other online service titles. The core premise remains the same though. Schreier would clarify in a recent tweet that this doesn’t mean the game is an MMO but it certainly isn’t just single-player.

What’s interesting is that Bethesda Game Studios Austin is also working on the project. The developer used to go by BattleCry Studios and was working on the ill-fated BattleCry before being renamed. One would assume that it operates the “live” service for the game while more substantial expansions and the like come from Bethesda Game Studios in Maryland.

More information will be offered at Bethesda’s E3 2018 presser on June 9th, 6:30 PM PT so take all of this with a grain of salt for now. What are your thoughts on Fallout 76 though? Let us know in the comments.
