Epic Games’ Unreal Engine continues to be the standard for game development in most of the industry, helped, no doubt, by the extraordinarily developer friendly environment and policies the company fosters with it. Epic, on their part, have continued to improve the engine, to help ensure developers can get the most out of it that they may need to realize their vision for their games.

And so, we have update 4.20 for the Unreal Engine- this update adds, among other things, a new cinematic depth of field effect enabler, new character rendering, a new VFX editor, significant improvements for Unreal Engine on mobile (including improved Android debugging, mobile landscape improvements, and occlusion queries on mobile), and major Switch updates.

The Switch updates include support for dynamic resolution, temporal upsampling, low latency frame syncing for controller input, significant CPU rendering optimizations, improvements to threading, better texture compression, support for memory profiling, and backbuffer support for 1080p while in docked mode, among other things. Hopefully, this should make the performance of games on Switch developed with Unreal Engine even more impressive (and lead to more third party ports as well).

You can check out the full patch notes for the update for yourself on Epic’s site.
