Assassin's Creed Odyssey (10)

Assassin’s Creed Origins completely revamped the combat of the series, and this year’s Odyssey is going to build on that new foundation. While the system will remain the same as last year’s game at its core, its making several changes and enhancements to provide players more mobility, agility, and customization. Ubisoft have now released a new video talking about how they’re doing that exactly.

In this video (which you can view below), game director Scott Phillips explains that though the protagonist is a Spartan, their fighting style is a little different from what one usually associates with Spartan warriors. That’s, of course, because the protagonist is a mercenary. In keeping with Odyssey’s central hook of providing more choices to its players, combat will have a lot more customization and variety than it did in Origins.

That comes through the combat’s three main branches, with one of them focusing on stealth, the other on direct melee combat, and the other on ranged combat (you can get more details on the latter in this report we wrote last week). Weapons and gear are, of course, upgradeable, and though the player character will no longer be equipped with a shield, you can still block and parry attacks with your weapons.

You can get more details on the combat system in the video below. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches on October 5 for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
