Twin Mirror Will Have Exploration Elements and Side Stories, Developer Confirms

Don't expect a large open world, though.

Twin Mirror

Dontnod Entertainment announced Twin Mirror not too long ago, an episodic adventure title that looks all the right kinds of cool, in typical, Dontnod fashion. One of the things that stands out about the game (there are many), is its setting, the town of Basswood, which looks like the perfect foil for the kind of surreal story and storytelling the game seems to be going for.

It won’t just be stage dressing, though. In an interview with WCCFTech, narrative producer Hélène Henry and writer Matthew Ritter spoke about how players will be able to explore the town while playing the game. Don’t expect it to be open world or anything- but there will be moments when you’ll be able to explore. Kind of similar to Life is Strange in that regard.

“In some levels, you’ll have the possibility to explore the town and talk to the inhabitants,” said Henry. “Still, it’s not an open world. It’s just the chance to explore relationships, to see people you haven’t seen for a long time. Sometimes you can have an impact on their lives if you decide to.”

“You can also decide to be a loner if you want. You can go through what you need to do and just what you want to do,” Henry continued. “It’s really up to the player to decide how much they want to explore the town and come back to the people that Sam knew from his past.”

There will, in fact, even be some side stories in the game, which, according to the developers, will tie in with the larger narrative as well. “These side stories that can dovetail back in and affect the larger game as a whole,” Ritter said. “It’s very much trying to tell a story where the town is its own character. Hopefully, getting to know the people there is a large part of the game, if that’s part of what you’re choosing to explore.”

“It was important for us that it stays intimate,” Henry added. “It won’t be a huge town with thousands of people, it’s not that large.”

Twin Mirror will consist of three episode, and the first one will be launching in early 2019 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Though it hasn’t been announced yet, a Nintendo Switch version of the game isn’t completely out of the question either.
