Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be A Different Game From Grand Theft Auto, But Will Allow Players To “Goof Around”

Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be very different from CD Projekt RED’s previous titles in several ways, and while the shift to the first person perspective is obviously a big one, it’s also set in a very different environment. Night City’s cyberpunk setting and its density have raised some interesting questions about the different kinds of activities it might hold.

GamingBolt recently asked Cyberpunk 2077 level designer Miles Tost some questions about the upcoming RPG, and one of the things we spoke about was whether, given it’s setting and its free form combat mechanics, it would provide players opportunities to goof around in the open world like they would in something like Grand Theft Auto.

Tost told us that the side activities in the game would be “crafted by us with a lot of love and care”, and that Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be “striving for a different, story-driven experience”.

“Our game will provide a lot of side activities for you to engage in outside the main quest,” Tost said. “Whether it’s side quests or encounters waiting for you on the streets of Night City, it will be crafted by us with a lot of love and care.”

“Whilst it’s very humbling to us to have our game be compared to GTA, with Cyberpunk 2077, we are striving for a different, story-driven experience,” he said, before adding, “That’s not to say we will stop players from goofing around.”

In the same interview, we also asked Tost about whether Cyberpunk 2077 might have any emergent gameplay mechanics, and his answer was along these same lines, saying that they would only considering adding something if it could “add to our story-driven experience in a meaningful way”. Read more on that through here.

CD Projekt RED recently confirmed distribution partnerships with Bandai Namco in Europe and Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment in North America for Cyberpunk 2077. Stay tuned for our full interview soon.
