The release of Kingdom Hearts 3 later this month almost seems like a dream. In development since 2006, it wasn’t until E3 2013 that a proper announcement trailer came out. Recent months have given us a much better look at the game, including the plethora of worlds that will be included from properties such as Frozen, Monsters Inc, Big Hero 6 and much more.

Given the Disney worlds seen thus far and how appealing each has looked, does Square Enix have a surprise up its sleeve? Well, no. Co-director Tai Yasue confirmed this while speaking to Newsweek, but did also state that the new properties offered the chance to come up with “new and fresh ideas.”

“There are a lot of good, logical reasons for picking new Disney properties, like appealing to a wider audience; but honestly, the main reason we picked new worlds such as Frozen and Tangled was because they excited us,” he said. “In terms of gameplay, there’s a lot of unique and crazy things you can do with a snowman that keeps on talking after having his head removed from his body, or a princess with super long golden hair. We’re not planning on revealing any surprise Disney worlds, but these new properties gave us a chance to come up with a lot of new and fresh ideas, that there will certain be a lot of surprises with the gameplay.”

Of course, the key words here are “Disney worlds”. Perhaps there are some surprise non-Disney worlds that could be showcased at some point in the story. Kingdom Hearts 3 releases on January 29th for Xbox One and PS4, so it won’t be too long before we find out.
