Death Stranding Is ‘Difficult To Grasp’, World Is ‘So Elaborate’

Mads Mikkelsen is just as confused about Death Stranding as the rest of us.

Every time we watch a new Death Stranding trailer, we go, “that was amazing, but what was that?” We understand less than we did before watching it. After two years of knowing about its existence and having seen multiple trailers, we still don’t know what the hell is going on in Death Stranding- which is not surprising, considering it’s a Hideo Kojima game. But as it turns out, we’re not the only ones who feel that way. Even Mads Mikkelsen, who’s starring in the game as one of the primary characters, has no idea what’s going on.

Recently, while speaking to Polygon, Mikkelsen got to reminiscing about how he agreed to collaborate with Kojima on the game, before going on to talk about the project itself, saying that though “it makes sense when it’s done”, when Kojima himself is talking about it, “it’s difficult to grasp”.

“I had no idea what he was talking about,” said Mikkelsen. “I was just meeting with the guy, and then I asked around me, and everybody, who was younger than me, just said, ‘Whoa, he’s the godfather of all gaming!’ And he turned out to be a genius. I mean, whatever he’s doing, I’ve never seen anything like it. Specifically for this, what we’re doing now, I’ve never seen anything like it. He still tries to pitch me what it is and I’m still standing there looking like an idiot, going, ‘What? Say it again?’ It is so elaborate, his world. It makes sense when it’s done, but it’s difficult to grasp when he talks about it.”

Mikkelsen moved on to speak about the ongoing work on the title, saying that though they’re still doing “little things” on the project, he can’t really say how much of that work is still left. “I’m not sure,” he said when asked about when the game might launch (unlike some others of his co-stars, who’ve been teasing 2019 release dates). “[Kojima will] be the boss of saying that. Yeah, we’ve got some quite heavy instructions on what to say and not to say.”

Kojima himself recently spoke about when the game might be out, and predictably enough, he was quite vague about it, saying that it’ll “take a while”. Read more on that through here.
