Days Gone’s Title “Can Mean Many Different Things”

"I think if we had ten players play Days Gone, you would get ten different answers to that question. ‘What does it mean?’" says game director John Garvin.

The pre-release anticipation continues to ramp up for SIE Bend Studios’ upcoming open world action-adventure title Days Gone, and in the build up to its launch, the developers have been speaking a great deal about it. Recently, the official PlayStation Twitter page put up a small snippet from the game, with game director John Garvin talking about it- and about its name in particular.

As per Garvin, the name “Days Gone” can mean many different things- though the obvious meaning of the title is instantly apparent, given its post-apocalyptic setting, Garvin says it also alludes to the title’s day and night cycle, which has quite a bit of impact on its open world gameplay, with how you approach every scenario being different based on what time of day it is.

“Here’s the thing about the title: it can mean so many different things,” said Garvin. “It can mean the day itself is gone, and the day-night cycle is so important to the game because the challenges, the dangers, the world changes after dark. More Freakers come out. The human enemies, the Marauders – they, sort of, take a back seat. But during the day, the Marauders are out, and they’re setting ambushes and trying to snipe you off your bike from the road.”

“So just the actual process of going from day to night is super important, so on that level – just on a physical level – there’s some nuance there about what ‘Days Gone’ is,” he continued. “I think if we had ten players play Days Gone, you would get ten different answers to that question. ‘What does it mean?’”

Days Gone is out on April 26 for the PS4, with reviews for the game beginning to go live the day before its launch. It’ll have an install size of 67 GB, while a new 17 GB patch for the game has also been rolled out. Meanwhile, Sony recently released a video discussing the perils of its open world environment- take a look through here.
