Mortal Kombat 11 Director Ed Boon Disputes Costly Character Skin Claims

Ed Boon says most skins aren’t even available to buy.

The grind to unlock items in Mortal Kombat 11 has been a sticking point for many since its recent launch. While its gameplay and presentation have been universally praised, many have criticized the game’s mobile-like in-game economy, which we also noted in our own review.

The criticism has clearly had an effect, as NetherRealm Studios plans to alter things already. One controversy that has spun from that, though, is the cost of cosmetic skins in terms of real money, with claims via Reddit that buying all costumes available in the game would cost a staggering $6,440. Series creator and Mortal Kombat 11 director Ed Boon, though, has taken some issue with the claim.

As you can see from his tweet below, Boon says the claims are not accurate, because of the simple fact that a large number of the skins are unlockable through playing the game. You unlock cosmetics through playing the Story Mode, the various Tower modes, online, and in the Krypt. Mortal Kombat 11 does have an in-game store, though, where each day a new set of three random character skins are up for sale. Whether Boon is saying that some skins will never come up for sale there is unclear, since he claims the vast majority of skins in the game are not for sale, and need to be earned through gameplay.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. We’ll keep you updated on whatever fixes are coming.
