Weapon upgrades can not be purchased with real money, however.

With a new trailer for MachineGames’ Wolfenstein: Youngblood doing the rounds, there was also the announcement of microtransactions for the co-op shooter. Early reports indicated that you could collect coins for weapon skins, cosmetics, and emotes, but that real-world money could be spent on Gold Bars that could also provide coins. It was reported that weapon upgrades could also be acquired this way.

This was due to an E3 round-table where a developer apparently said they could be purchased to enable faster progression. Thankfully, Bethesda clarified to VG247 that microtransactions were only cosmetic. Weapon upgrades require the in-game currency Silver, and that can’t be purchased with real money like Gold Bars.

The addition of microtransactions for cosmetics does somewhat explain the game’s co-op nature. Buy new skins and emotes to show off to friends, essentially. However, at the very least, Bethesda wants to keep things on a fairly even field gameplay-wise. So if you want to become more powerful, you have to play the game.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is out on July 26th for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
