Marvel’s Avengers Will Let You Have “A Complete Experience” Without Ever Going Online

“We want somebody to be able to go buy a disc and never have to go online,” says Crystal Dynamics studio head Scott Amos.

Any fears that Marvel’s Avengers will be a live service shared world game in vein of something like Destiny have been laid to rest by the developers in the last few weeks. Though there’s going to be a strong co-op component to it, the game still has what the developers are calling “a huge spine of a single player cinematic led story”, while supposedly, nearly all in-game activities can be tackled solo.

In fact, as per Crystal Dynamics studio head Scott Amos, post-launch content will also be playable solo, and the game won’t ever compel players to go online and play with others to have fun. The developers intend to put a “complete” package onto the disc itself, after which you never have to go online to enjoy the content you have if you don’t want to.

“We want somebody to be able to go buy a disc and never have to go online,” said Amos while speaking with GamesIndustry at E3 2019. “You don’t have to. You can have a complete experience and have fun. But there’s all this cool new stuff that’s coming, all these new heroes, you have to go online for that stuff. That’s how it’s going to work.”

Amos goes on to describe how post-launch content is going to work in Avengers, saying that once you’ve completed the single player campaign, you then have the option of jumping into even more new stories and missions, and get the chance to play as even more of the Avengers.

“Now that you have gone through that story campaign that sets up the stakes in the world, the next step is saying there’s all this stuff to do,” he said. “Global threats are ever escalating, new levels, new heroes showing up at no additional cost.

“As that happens, you have a larger pantheon or roster of heroes to jump into. Now all of us can say: ‘Great, I want to be this character or that character. I want to go back to the core five that they started with and play together in new ways’. As it expands, all of it also has story. We just keep adding more and more story to this for years to come.”

Marvel’s Avengers is out on May 15, 2020 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia.
