When Square Enix debuted the first trailer and footage for Marvel’s Avengers, it wasn’t what people were expecting on a few levels. Many thought, and maybe naturally so with the recent release of Endgame, that the game would have a more MCU-inspired look about it. It doesn’t really, and none of the actors from the MCU reprise those roles that we’ve been made aware of. While the films introduced these characters to millions of people, a lot for the first time, it can be easy to forget that they’ve been around for decades before they ever hit the big screen. That’s something that the voice actors for the game, especially Troy Baker, know all too well.
In speaking at Manchester Comic-Con, Baker and Nolan North spoke about the ‘backlash’ from people who expected more obvious MCU influences. Both said the game aims to draw more from the comics than the films, with Baker especially spinning his knowledge and saying that he’s well aware that you can’t please everyone, and that the character he plays reminded him more of the character he knew from certain comic stories (thanks to Push Square for transcribing the talk).
“We’ll always be on someone’s sh*t list, right?” said Baker. “So when they launched the latest trailer and put it out there, the immediate backlash from fans was, ‘It doesn’t look like Chris Evans! It doesn’t look like Robert Downey Jr!’ Well, you know who it does look like? It looks exactly like Iron Man. It looks exactly like Captain America. It looks exactly like Bruce Banner.
“For me, the second they showed me what Bruce looked like, I was like, ‘Oh, you stole from the Ultimates.’ It looks 100 per cent like the guy from Ultimates. And I’m like, ‘That’s my Bruce Banner. That’s the guy that literally ate New York and cannot reconcile the guilt.’”
North also mentioned being blown away by the game not too long ago, so while some may be disappointed at the lack of films in the game, hopefully the game can stand on its own against the films. Marvel’s Avengers will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia May 15th 2020. If you’re curious about the gameplay, check out some nifty information on it through here.
