Sony dropped the bombshell yesterday that they’ve acquired Insomniac Games, and the studio has now formally joined their first party lineup. For many, it seemed like a no-brainer move, considering how closely Insomniac and Sony have been working together, and for how long. In a new update put up on the developer’s site, CEO Ted Price gave his thoughts on this acquisition, while also giving a message to fans of Insomniac.

Price’s thoughts about the acquisition are along those lines, with him bringing up the long working relationship Insomniac and Sony have shared up until now already, from the days of Spyro the Dragon to Ratchet and Clank to Spider-Man.

“Today we announced that Insomniac has a new home as we join the Worldwide Studios family at Sony Interactive Entertainment,” he wrote. “It feels more like a homecoming though.  We’ve collaborated with Sony for more than 20 years — spanning all four PlayStation consoles, 20 total games and six franchises. We still work closely today with many of the same Sony teammates as we did when we released the original Spyro the Dragon in 1998.”

According to Price, though, the decision to join Sony’s rank was something that, for Insomniac, went “beyond familiarity”. As per him, with Sony, the studio should be able to achieve its visions on “a much larger scale”, while he feels the two entities’ shared outlooks and philosophies also benefit them greatly.

“The decision to join forces with Sony extends far beyond familiarity,” wrote Price. “Our studio vision is to create experiences that have a positive and lasting impact on people’s lives. As we look ahead to our future, we know that joining the WWS family gives us the best opportunities to fully achieve that vision on a much larger scale. Further, we believe that Sony shares a similar vision to positively impact players’ lives, their employees’ lives and the games industry at large.”

Price also ensured fans that Insomniac’s structure and their workflow will remain the same despite the acquisition, and that they will continue to “cultivate our unique culture.”

“We’re excited to put Insomniac in the best position to deliver fresh experiences for our fans for many years to come,” he wrote. “Our structure and approach will remain intact across both Burbank and Durham, NC studios, and we will continue to cultivate our unique culture.”

As for what lies next for Insomniac, whatever it is that they’re working on next isn’t something that Sony have announced officially yet. Given the insane success of Spider-Manit goes without saying the a sequel is under development. Meanwhile, not too long ago, reports also emerged that suggested that a new Ratchet and Clank title was in the works as well. As for what happens to Sunset Overdrive, Sony doesn’t seem too keen on that property– so maybe don’t hold your breath for any news on that front for the time being.
