It's a much more intense process than you probably expect.

The father of the looter shooter genre, or whatever you want to call it, is coming back in the form of Borderlands 3. The game is promising a lot of new content, such as the new Proving Grounds mode, but it also is going to be familiar with the game’s notable humor. While the game’s narrative is taking from more modern technology, the jokes are still going to be flying. If you ever wondered how those jokes come about, it’s actually more involved than you probably are expecting.

In an interview with PCGamesN, Producer Chris Brock talked about how the writers came up with the jokes, and it’s not as simple as one may think. There’s a pretty large writing group, with each person getting their input with consideration to how every joke will land with the large group. Considering how that’s now over 400 people, it’s a long way to go.

“We talk about it and think about it a lot more,” says Brock. “I think in the past, we’ve just kinda done stuff. But now we say ‘okay we have this joke and we want to run it by the studio.’ And the studio’s huge now – we have 400 people in Dallas and 100 people in Quebec. So we go ‘how does this joke land with everybody?’

“We’ve all got a personal line, some of our lines will be crossed, but we have to as a team, understand that we’re putting our best foot forward,” continues Brock. “Be edgy, be funny, don’t be cruel, don’t be insensitive, be understanding, be sympathetic. We have a very diverse studio culture, and everybody wants to represent that.”

Borderlands 3 releases September 13th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Check out our interview with Senior Producer Anthony Nicholson about the game through here.
