Among the many, many things about Death Stranding that we don’t have a lot of information on, its multiplayer has perhaps been the most shrouded in mystery. We’ve heard about how it’s going to offer something completely unique, while recently at Gamescom, Hideo Kojima also shared some more tidbits about the game’s social elements (which had something to do with urinating, believe it or not).

Now, speaking with in a interview with Julien Chièze (translated over at Reddit), Kojima has shed a little more light on the game’s multiplayer elements.

“All I can say is that it is an open world in which the players will quickly find out that the approach is different,” he said. “It’s going to be hard task and you must reconnect a fractured society and split up humans. You do this with a character who has nothing to do with superheroes. Sam is just by himself and must survive, he has no special power. The more you play the more you will notice that he isn’t the only one in this situation. At launch, there will probably be millions of people who will play and you will be connected to them using something…”

When asked to elaborate on what that “something” might be, Kojima went on to make comparisons with the film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (which he’s actually done before as well), saying that the movie’s premise provides some clues about similar themes in Death Stranding.

“It’s like Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Miles thinks he is the only Spider-Man, then different characters from different alternate dimensions also become Spider-Man and meet up, all of a sudden Miles is not alone. Of course, Death Stranding will be different, but it’s a clue towards what the game is about.”

Death Stranding is out on November 8 for the PS4. Recently, Kojima also spoke about the game’s open world setting, how it affects the narrative and storytelling in Death Stranding, and what lessons it learned from Metal Gear Solid 5. Read more on that through here.
