The Outer Worlds Hopes To Eliminate Studio’s Reputation Of Buggy Releases

Obsidian hopes this game will put their reputation of buggy games to rest.

While Obsidian Entertainment is, I think it’s fair to say, a respected developer whose games have largely been well received, I also think it’s fair to say a lot of those games have been fairly buggy. Bugs are always going to be part of the big, open titles, but some of their previous titles have been pretty buggy. They know it, too, and are hoping that The Outer Worlds helps squash that rep.

Talking with VGC, Narrative Designer Megan Starks commented on some previous things the game’s Design Director, Josh Sawyer, had said about that reputation, saying a lot of the infamous buggy releases came down to publisher deadlines and budget. According to her, part of the reason for the delay was for “playtesting, polishing and catching all of those edge cases and smoothing them out. That’s been our focus for the last few months.”

The Outer Worlds will release on October 25th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It’s also coming to the Nintendo Switch at an as-of-yet unannounced date. Hopefully, it’ll be the first of many, as the studio has a lot of ideas for the future.
