Next year the Avengers will assemble with Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers. It will bring together some of the most well known and beloved characters that the Marvel films have brought to life. Of course, one big feature is going to be the access to various heroes and skins from the comics, but the game also hopes to have a distinctly human touch with its story.

Speaking with the PlayStation Blog, Crystal Dynamics Studio Head Scot Amos spoke about how much they were drawing from the storied history of Marvel comics for creating the game version of these characters, as well as how the story is all about gripping with very human feelings and emotions, specifically failure and dealing with loss.

“When we started on our first draft of the story, we had a lot of things to consider,” Scot explains. “We wanted our game to disband the Avengers and have the player bring them back together again so you’re not just saving the world, you’re saving the Avengers. After A-Day they’re bruised and battered, they’ve lost all hope because they feel they let San Francisco be destroyed and failed their leader, Captain America.

“Fortunately, the team at Marvel Games said, ‘We love it! You can tear them down, build them back up, rebuild the team, and show the humans behind the masks.’ That’s one way that Marvel Super Heroes have always been so brilliantly written, that you have a Super Hero with normal everyday problems that they have to deal with — and building a game around that has been a real treat.”

One aspect of Marvel characters that’s struck a cord with audiences is they often are written as everyday people struggling with everyday problems despite their powers. Hopefully, the team can hit the landing. We’ll know when Marvel’s Avengers launches May 15th 2020.
