The Outer Worlds Developers “Very, Very Surprised” With Switch Version

"We weren't sure it could be done," says co-game director Leonard Boyarsky.

The Outer Worlds is out now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, where it’s gone off to a great start, bringing the promise of a freeform, classic RPG with its sense of humour and bevy of choices. The Obsidian-developed RPG is also coming out for the Nintendo Switch next year– and that, as it turns out, is something Obsidian did not expect would happen.

Speaking with US Gamer, co-game director Leonard Boyarsky said that Obsidian themselves weren’t sure The Outer Worlds could be made to work on the Switch, but when Switch port specialists Virtuous came to them with a proof of concept to show that it actually could, they were, in Boyarsky’s words, “very, very surprised.”

“We weren’t sure it could be done,” said Boyrasky. “But then they started coming out with all these games on Nintendo Switch, and we thought, ‘Wow, that’s great.’ And then we saw the proof of concept from the external team who was doing it and we were very, very surprised.”

Virtuous, of course, have had a lot of experience working on Switch ports for massive games, having handled the likes of L.A. Noire, Dark Souls Remastered, and Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age. There’s still a while to go before the Obsidian RPG lands on the Switch, but the studio’s ability certainly gives us (and many others) confidence that it’ll turn out alright.

Meanwhile, The Outer Worlds is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, if you don’t feel like waiting for the game till next year.
