Anthem was suppose to be a massive new live service game for Electronic Arts, something that would be an ongoing behemoth to rival the likes of Destiny or Rainbow Six Siege. It wasn’t that, however, as the game was plagued with technical issues and anemic content. It didn’t help that horror stories emerged about the game’s troubled development. Since its rocky launch, we’ve only gotten vague updates about what the future holds, but it seems BioWare has big plans to reinvent the game.

As reported by Kotaku‘s Jason Schreier, who also reported on the very troubled development cycle of Anthem, both the American and Canadian offices of BioWare are hard at work overhauling the game with dozens or hundreds developers working on it, internally referring to it as Anthem 2.0 or Anthem Next.

While live service games have launched poorly and been revived, with Final Fantasy 14 being the biggest examples after an incredibly successful overhaul following a disastrous launch, it’s hard to say if something like that can be done for Anthem. While the game seemingly sold well and will continue to be available thanks to EA Access, the question is whether or not the audience will return for it. With the right marketing push and right timing anything is possible. We’ll just have to wait and see what this Anthem 2.0 will look like when the time comes.
