Grand Theft Auto Online Won’t See Support Stopped Anytime Soon, Per Rockstar

Online is still where the big money is.

One thing that has happened over this generation has been the major shift to online functionality and the continued support of a title. No other company has personified this more than Rockstar Games and their hugely popular Grand Theft Auto Online. The online component of Grand Theft Auto 5 has grown into a thing all its own, but the focus on it has also lead to a lot less games from the company (technically, they only released one new game this generation, since GTA5 was crossgen). People hoping for something different are probably going to be disappointed, too, as support for GTA Online isn’t stopping anytime soon.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Rockstar North Co-studio Head Rob Nelson, said that the support for the game’s online part is ever evolving and that the studio has been surprised with just how much players have taken to it. The latest major update has brought in more people than anyone expected. And Nelson said that there’s more on the way even six years out.

“We try to keep plans going roughly a year out, but we want to have the flexibility to be responsive to any changes,” says Nelson. “So we choose not to telegraph that entire timeline to players. That said, players should feel confident that we have a ton of brand new ideas still to come. It’s been six years and we just hit record player numbers and we are all incredibly grateful to everyone who’s been with us along the way.”

With Red Dead Redemption 2 getting its own online mode in a similar fashion, it’s probably best to just get used to only getting a couple of titles here and there from the company. Those wanting more single player titles are just out of luck, it seems, but if you’re loving multiplayer, there’s just more and more coming to love.
