We’re now caught in a window of time when any major new video game release will be faced with the same question- will there be next-gen ports of the game. With the PS5 and the Xbox Series X launching this Holiday, there’s bound to be questions about what happens with major games coming out current-gen consoles before next-gen rolls around- and there’s no shortage of such releases.

One of the biggest (and closest) upcoming games is DOOM Eternal, and with the developers promising to get every last bit of juice out of current gen hardware, and with the game being built on the brand new id Tech 7, those questions have been thrown at developers id Software as well.

Recently answering such a question while speaking with MetroDOOM Eternal director Marty Stratton said that though id Software haven’t yet talked about next-gen consoles (what with being focused on the game’s imminent release), it is something that excites them. Stratton also admitted that porting DOOM Eternal to the PS5 and Xbox Series X and making sure the game is among the best available experiences on those platforms would be a “logical” thing to do.

“We haven’t talked about it yet but one of the exciting things is we’re at the end of this console cycle, where our team knows this tech really, really well,” Stratton said. “So it really allowed us to push and get the most out of this hardware. And I’m super excited about what it means for the next hardware.

“So we haven’t announced anything, but it’s really exciting. They’re doing some really awesome stuff with that hardware so I think it’s logical that we would push onto that and honestly try to be one of the best games on that platform as well.”

Regardless of whether or not that ends up happening, the day we finally get out hands on DOOM Eternal isn’t far away. It’s out on March 20 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia, and some time after that for the Nintendo Switch.

If you’re looking for more new details on DOOM Eternal, don’t worry- there’s been plenty of that over the last week. Make sure to read up on the game’s multiplayer, its story, the new hub, how it approaches difficulty, and how long the game is going to be.
