Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Nintendo Switch Top NPD January 2020 Sales

Total video game spending was $678 million, down by 26 percent compared to the same month last year.

The NPD Group released its report on video game spending in the United States for January 2020 and revealed that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was the best-selling game for the month. Its launch month sales were the third highest in the series’ history behind Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai. However, overall dollar sales of software were at $311 million, which is a 31 percent drop year-on-year.

As Venture Beat notes, other software highlights include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare being the second best-selling title and overall the best-selling game of the past 12 months. Grand Theft Auto 5 experienced a resurgence to the top 5 and remains the best-selling in the United States till date. In terms of hardware, the Nintendo Switch was on top, both in terms of units and dollar sales.

Hardware spending came to $129 million for the month, which is a 35 percent decline over the same period last year. Overall spending for hardware, software and accessories was $678 million, a drop of 26 percent year-on-year. This is attributed to the end of the console cycle and the impending release of the Xbox Series X and PS5.
