UPDATE: Capcom have confirmed (via Polygon) that Nemesis cannot actually follow you into safe rooms in Resident Evil 3. The information was based on the OXM editor entering a room with a progress-saving typewriter in it that Nemesis followed Jill into, but that room was not actually a designated safe room.

So yeah- safe rooms are still, well, safe.

Original story follows:

Capcom have a lot to live up to with the upcoming Resident Evil 3, in terms of both, following up on last year’s excellent RE2, and doing justice to the original RE3. More particularly, they’re going to have to live up to high expectations when it comes to Nemesis himself- and sure enough, they seem to be adamant on making sure that this relentless pursuer is going to terrify players like nothing else in Resident Evil ever has.

A ton of new Resident Evil 3 details have emerged in the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine (issue 188), and one tidbit in particular will greatly excite and terrify Resident Evil fans. It’s been confirmed that Nemesis will be the first monster in series history who can break the cardinal rule of not being able to enter safe rooms- so if he’s chasing you and you decide to enter a safe room to get him off your back, he’ll just follow you inside.

Capcom have also confirmed, however, that they’ll be making sure that Nemesis is not a literally constant threat, in order to give players some breathing room. While they do want the threat of him bearing down on you at any moment to be ever-present, there will be certain areas where he won’t be able to follow you. Additionally, his AI works to ensure that he’s not chasing players all the time, because they recognize that that could get tiring very quickly.

Resident Evil 3 is due out on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3. You can check out over a dozen minutes of recent gameplay footage through here. A demo will also be dropping before the game’s launch, so stay tuned for details on that.
