PS5’s OS Reportedly Wants To Make Playing Games “As Easy As Netflix”

Other than the powerful tech powering both next-gen consoles, it seems something else that both Microsoft and Sony are both putting a great deal of emphasis on for their upcoming systems is speed and ease of use. This is materializing through quality of life features, with both consoles’ SSDs promising super-quick load times, and the Xbox Series X also having revealed features such as Quick Resume.

Something else that it seems like Sony might incorporate in the PS5’s operating system is the ability to load up games and directly boot into gameplay or specific templates, as suggested by a recent patent, which means that theoretically, you should be able to load directly into, say, matchmaking queues for multiplayer games, or load directly at a waypoint in a single player game to begin a specific mission or activity.

And it seems that patent might actually materialize as something tangible in the PS5. Posting on ResetEra, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier said that Sony is aiming to tailor the console’s operating system so that it makes playing games “as easy as Netflix.”

“I have heard some fascinating things about the PS5’s operating system like this – one of the pitches they’ve been making to developers is ‘playing a PS5 game should be as easy as Netflix,'” he wrote. “They want to make players feel like they can load up the game immediately and know exactly how much time a given activity is going to take them. They want people to feel more inclined to play in short bursts rather than only wanting to turn on the console when they have a few hours to spare.”

The PS5 is slated for a Holiday 2020 launch, and as per a recent update to its webpage, Sony still seem confident of hitting that date. You can read our complete breakdown of the console’s recent tech deep dive through here.
