Microsoft’s recent gameplay showcase for the Xbox Series X has been something of a disappointment, not only because we didn’t really see a lot of gameplay, but also because it feels like it didn’t show us the next-gen gameplay and visuals we were all hoping it would.

However, according to Geoff Keighley, you should not define your expectations for next-gen games will look like based on that. Recently, responding on Twitter to an article by IGN stating that next-gen visuals probably won’t be too much of a jump over what we already see on consoles, Keighley suggested that that would not be the case, saying, “This article will likely not age well.”

Aspects of both the PS5 and their Xbox Series X – such as hardware accelerated ray tracing, for instance – do promise games that will look significantly better, and it’s also worth considering that there are plenty of developers out there whose work we haven’t yet seen. Add to that the fact that first party studios generally tend to get the best out of consoles, and that visuals tend to get progressively better as generations progress, and it’s more than likely that graphics on the PS5 and the Xbox Series X will be a big jump over their current-gen counterparts.

We might get our first taste of those enhanced visuals soon. Microsoft will be showing new first party games for the Xbox Series X in July (including Halo Infinite), while rumours have suggested that the PS5 will have its own event in June. Here’s hoping the games we see in the coming months impress us visually- and in other ways.
