For two console generations now, Grand Theft Auto 5 has dominated the sales charts. The game has sold a crazy amount, far more than I imagine anyone ever expected, and it’s poised to do the same for the next generation as it’s been confirmed to come to next generation consoles as well. A big part of that? The incredible success of Grand Theft Auto Online. Up to now, that part of the game has been married to Grand Theft Auto 5, but it seems the shackles are soon to come off.

As revealed via their fiscal reports, there is a planned standalone edition of Grand Theft Auto Online to come at some point in the ‘second half’ of next year. It’s important to note that while no pricing scheme was announced, it was confirmed not to be free to play, though PS5 users will be able to download it for free for three months after initial launch.

As it stands, there is no clarification if this is only for PC and next generation consoles or whether this will also apply to current generation consoles where the game now runs. In the same report, Take-Two Interactive did confirm that exclusive content would be coming to next generation consoles and PC, meaning it’s entirely possible the current PS4 and Xbox One versions will be phased out in similar fashion to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions was at one point.

Grand Theft Auto Online standalone will be available at some point in 2021. If you want to check out the game now, you can of course as part of a package with Grand Theft Auto 5 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. PS4 players playing with a PS Plus subscription will also get $1 million dollars monthly in-game dollars until the launch of the PS5 version next year.
