There aren’t too many figures in the games industry who inspire confidence in new games on the basis of just their names, but Yoko Taro is definitely one of them. As the creator of Drakengard and NieR (and, of course, the director of NieR: Automata), he has a track record that speaks for itself. And he’s a busy man, too, because it seems like he’s at work on a couple of new projects as well.
Speaking during a year end celebration stream (via Wccftech), Yoko Taro and Square Enix producer Yosuke Saito revealed that Taro is currently at work on two new projects. One of these is a game that Taro has wanted to make for a long time, and has apparently been talked about between the pair for some time as well.
The second, interestingly enough, is described as an unsettling concept that Saito initially didn’t want to greenlight, but went ahead and gave the approval for due to Taro’s enthusiasm for the idea. Not many details are given on it, though the pair do say that it’s in the early stages of production. As of right now, they’re not even sure what genre the game will be.
As I mentioned earlier, Yoko Taro has a knack for creating some truly memorable and fresh experiences that, more often than not, dare to do unique and interesting things, so whatever it is that he’s working on will be worth keeping an eye on. Here’s hoping it won’t be too long before we hear something concrete about at least one of these two new games.
