Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - Remake

True to persistent rumours in recent months, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake has been officially announced. Developed by Aspyr Media, the game is going to be a full, ground-up remake of BioWare’s beloved 2003 classic, and given the pedigree and legacy of that game, the developer has quite a lot to live up to. Following its announcement, more details on the remake have been made available in a PlayStation Blog post written by lead producer Ryan Treadwell.

For starters, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Remake is going to be a PS5 console exclusive launch. That probably means it will release for PC as well, and there’s no word yet on how long its PS5 exclusivity will last.

Moving on to the game itself though, what sort of an approach has Aspyr taken to the remake’s development? Treadwell writes: “We’re rebuilding one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a new generation with modern tech, features, visuals and more, while maintaining the integrity of the story and characters that we’ve come to cherish.” He later foes on to add that it is being rebuilt “from the ground up with the latest tech to match the groundbreaking standard of innovation established by the original, all while staying true to its revered story.”

One question that many will likely have is, of course, how Aspyr landed this project in the first place. They’ve been responsible for a number of Star Wars ports for modern systems in recent years, but they haven’t developed anything that comes close to being of a similar scope to Knights of the Old Republic – Remake.

Treadwell ensures, however, that Aspyr Media has “assembled the very best talent from across the industry” and has a team that includes “industry veterans who have worked on great RPGs, as well as some members of the original Knights of the Old Republic development team.”

And when exactly will the game be out? Treadwell says it’s “still early in development”, so it’ll likely be a good while.
