We’re only just a few weeks removed from the release of Battlefield 2042, the latest entry in EA and DICE’s ongoing shooter franchise. While the game suffered a rocky technical launch, the rumor is that the game has still sold well, and the developer has done a lot of updating already to put things up to snuff. Even though we aren’t far removed from 2042, we already are getting rumors about what the next game will look like, and it’s looking to be a very different experience.
Leaker Tom Henderson, who has leaked a wealth of information about the series, has said the next Battlefield title will be a “hero shooter,” presumably in the vein of something like Overwatch or Apex Legends, and will have a battle royale mode. He says that 2042 and its specialist system was meant to be something of a stepping stone to this hero shooter structure. Henderson does say that plans could change, as 2042 went through several changes itself before release, but he seems pretty convinced this will be the direction for this new title.
We know that EA is looking to expand Battlefield with a recent report about the new multi-studio approach to the franchise. We’ll have to see what the future holds. As of now, Battlefield 2042 is now available on PC and consoles.
The next Battlefield title is scoped as a hero shooter of sorts – It's not a removal of specialists, but an enhancement of them. #Battlefield2042 has always been intended to be a stepping stone to a "hero shooter" with a Battle Royale – It was just executed poorly.

It should be said to take with a grain of salt, of course, but given that I heard about this stuff last week and with all of the announcements the past couple of days, it makes perfect sense.
BF 2042 did change direction early on, but I can't see them changing it?
