Less than a year ago, Sony confirmed that it was working on a new PlayStation VR headset for the PS5, but little details on it were revealed at the time or in the months since then. Recently, taking the stage at CES 2022, Sony officially announced PlayStation VR2, and while we’re still yet to see the headset itself, specs and details have been revealed. A lot of these details are in line with leaks that have emerged over the last few months.
PSVR2 will use a single cord setup, and promises improvements to hardware and specs across the board. It will feature support for 4K and HDR, with the headset boasting an OLED screen a display resolution of 2000×2040 per eye and refresh rates of 90/120Hz. Also confirmed are a 110 degree FoV, foveated rendering, inside-out tracking through integrated cameras embedded in the headset, and eye tracking.
Another feature that Sony has confirmed is feedback in the headset through the use of a single vibration motor, which will “add an intelligent tactile element, bringing players closer to the gameplay experience.” As per the PlayStation Blog post, players will be able to “feel a character’s elevated pulse during tense moments, the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, or the thrust of a vehicle as the character speeds forward.”
The new PSVR2 controllers, which were first unveiled in March 2021, have also received new details. Officially called the PlayStaton VR2 Sense controllers, specs for these, which were briefly detailed upon the aforementioned reveal, have been reiterated by Sony.
Sony promises that with eye tracking, vibration feedback in the headset, 3D audio, and the features of the Sense controllers, PSVR2 will “create an incredibly deep feeling of immersion.” You can check out the full specs for PSVR2 and the PSVR2 Sense controller below.
Details on PSVR2’s price of its release date are yet to be confirmed, but one would imagine that that information will likely come a few months down the line. Recent reports have claimed that the new headset is going to enter full production soon, while some rumours have also indicated that it is targeting a Holiday 2022 launch.
Meanwhile, Sony has also announced Horizon Call of the Wild exclusively for the PSVR2, developed together by Guerrilla and Firesprite Games. Read more on that through here.
