Gamescom will kick off on August 23 with Gamescom Opening Night Live, and producer and host Geoff Keighley has been sharing details on what to expect from this year’s show over the last few days. Having recently confirmed it to be a roughly 2-hour long live show with over 30 games featured, recently, in a Twitter Spaces session, he provided some more rough details.
As you’d expect, the show will feature a mix of updates on games that have already been announced, as well as new announcements of upcoming titles. Keighley says to expect “some cool surprises and things that people wouldn’t expect”, while he also explains that a number of the games shown off are scheduled to launch in 2023.
“We’ve got some good stuff,” Keighley said (transcribed by VGC). “We haven’t really announced the line-up of companies that will be there, but I think we’ve got some cool surprises and things that I think people wouldn’t expect to be there… There are a lot of games. We’re going to have 2 hours of content to show you [including] gameplay clips, trailers, and announcements.
“This year is a lighter year for releases that are coming out later this year, so a lot of stuff will be about what’s coming in 2023 and beyond. But yeah, I think people will be hyped and I’m very excited for fans to see stuff and be in the room.”
A number of titles have already been confirmed for Gamescom Opening Night Live so far, including the likes of Sonic Frontiers and new as-of-yet-unannounced titles by Owlboy developer D-Pad Studio and Subnautica developer Unknown Worlds.
Gamescom will run from August 24 to August 28 as a hybrid in-person and digital event. Microsoft recently revealed details on its booth and streams for Gamescom- read more on that through here.
