It was a rough weekend for Rockstar Games, with source code and footage for Grand Theft Auto 6 leaking online. The hacker reportedly claimed to be the same one responsible for breaching Microsoft, Samsung, Nvidia and, more recently, Uber. Uber has since released a statement on the same, identifying the individual as part of the group Lapsus$.

“We believe that this attacker (or attackers) are affiliated with a hacking group called Lapsus$, which has been increasingly active over the last year or so. This group typically uses similar techniques to target technology companies, and in 2022 alone has breached Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia and Okta, among others.”

It acknowledged reports that “this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games.” Uber said it was in “close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”

Rockstar Games also released a statement about the leak recently and said it didn’t anticipate any disruption to current services or any long-term impact on projects in development. It was “extremely disappointed” to see the details leaked but said that work on the next Grand Theft Auto would “continue as planned.”

“We remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds your expectations. We will update everyone again soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it is ready.”

Grand Theft Auto 6 was reportedly targeting a release sometime between April 2023 and March 2024. However, developers believe it’s “at least two years” off, which means it could arrive sometime in the 2025 fiscal year. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the meantime.
