The Callisto Protocol – PlayStation Only Helped with Performance Capture, Did No Additional Work

The Callisto Protocol has been out for a couple of weeks now, and though expectations were high from the Dead Space spiritual successor, reception for the game has been mixed. One of the things that it’s received criticism for is its poor technical optimization, on Xbox and PC in particular- and interestingly enough, the fact that the game launched in a much better technical state on PlayStation has raised some eyebrows, especially in context of the knowledge that The Callisto Protocol received development support from Sony.

However, while conspiracy theorists might be hypothesizing about possible interference by Sony leading to degraded quality on other platforms, Striking Distance Studios CEO Glen Schofield has firmly put those rumours to bed. Taking to Twitter, Schofield clarified that the developer worked with PlayStation on performance capture for The Callisto Protocol’s cinematics, and nothing else.

“They didn’t do any additional work on the game,” he wrote.

Striking Distance Studios has released a number of patches for the survival horror title to improve its technical state and performance on all platforms. The developer is currently also working on post-launch content for the game, which will begin in February with a free update that will add New Game Plus, among other things.

In our review of The Callisto Protocol, we gave it a score of 6/10, saying, “The Callisto Protocol looks stunning and can offer small doses of fun, but from misguided gameplay choices and hyper-linear design to ineffectual attempts at horror and a bland story, it stumbles and disappoints in too many ways to be labelled as anything but a disappointment.” Read the full review through here.

The Callisto Protocol is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
