PS5 sales had been throttled for nearly two years following its launch due to global supply shortages, but recent weeks have seen Sony confirming that the shortages have eased up. The console, as a result, has enjoyed significantly higher sales all over the world, and that’s been reflected in European markets as well.

The GSD recently released data (via GamesIndustry) for gaming hardware sales in in Europe (not including Germany or the UK) for the month of January, revealing that collectively, all consoles sold over 493,000 units in the region over the course of the month.

The PS5 was the best performing console, enjoying a 202% increase in sales year-on-year, and also causing total hardware sales to increase 15.5% over January last year. On the other hand, Xbox Series X/S sales fell 32%.

The Nintendo Switch, meanwhile, saw an 11% year-on-year decrease in sales, though given that it’s about to enter its seventh year, that doesn’t come as a surprise.

The PS5 has enjoyed boosts in sales in a number of markets, having seen a 98% year-on-year increase in January sales in the UK. It also topped recent hardware sales charts in both the US and Japan.

Sony recently announced that as of December 31, the PS5 has shipped 32.1 million units worldwide. Reports claim that the company is expecting continued sales increases for the coming fiscal year, allegedly thanks in part to a new upcoming PS5 model that will come with a detachable disc drive.
