CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty only received a trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase, but there’s plenty of excitement following the Play Days event. As more press went hands-on with the expansion, the developer has also revealed its scope, from the new story and characters to the activities and mechanics.

While the original plan was for the title to have two expansions (at least), it changed to focus on free updates and then Phantom Liberty. As director Gabe Amatangelo told Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, “There’s an absolute dedication to what’s needed to be done to make it right.”

Amatangelo’s name may be familiar to some – he took over as director for the expansion following the departure of Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz (who left after his brother Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the latter accused of bullying). Since then, he’s also worked on patch 1.5, which added current-gen console support, AI fixes, multiple apartments and much more.

Phantom Liberty has been in development for over two years, and with the expansion about finished, he revealed that the board of directors at CD Projekt provided the time and resources he asked for to “make it right.” “The commitment to it from a board level is something else, really. I was struck by the humility and willingness to change.”

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is out on September 26th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. Head here for more details and here to check out Dogtown’s Black Market.
