Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout TV series is set to premiere in April next year, and fans of the post-apocalyptic franchise will be hoping that it will be able to cement itself as another recent example of well-made and well-received adaptations of games. In the lead-up to the premiere a few months from now, new images published by Vanity Fair have offered a first look at what the show will look like, while additional details have also been revealed.

The one tidbit that fans of the franchise will be particularly interested is the fact that the upcoming show will officially be part of Fallout canon, as confirmed by Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard, who’s also executive producing the show.

“We view what’s happening in the show as canon,” Howard said. “That’s what’s great, when someone else looks at your work and then translates it in some fashion.”

Howard also says the series will build an entirely original story in the Fallout universe, rather than looking to any particular game as its primary inspiration. “I did not want to do an interpretation of an existing story we did,” he said. “That was the other thing—a lot of pitches were, you know, ‘This is the movie of Fallout 3…’ I was like, ‘Yeah, we told that story.’ I don’t have a lot of interest seeing those translated. I was interested in someone telling a unique Fallout story. Treat it like a game. It gives the creators of the series their own playground to play in.”

Interestingly, it’s also been confirmed that iconic Vault Boy will not only be making an appearance in the show, but will also get an origin story. “That was something that they came up with that’s just really smart,” Howard said, though as you might image, he didn’t give away any other details.

The first episode of Fallout will premiere on Amazon’s Prime Video on April 12.
