Elden Ring Nightreign has caused a stir since its reveal at The Game Awards, and for good reason. It’s the first dedicated multiplayer title by FromSoftware, with up to three players teaming up to survive three nights and take down the Nightlord. Of course, you can go solo if desired.
Unfortunately, playing alongside a single partner isn’t possible. Game director Junya Ishizaki told IGN that Nightreign is “either one-player or three-player.” While the experience is designed explicitly for the latter, enemy health will still scale based on the number of players, much like Elden Ring.
As for why the team decided on three-player coop, Ishizaki said the team “wanted to retain that sense of accomplishment you get from battling a boss together or from conquering a map together and that sense of enjoyment, but we wanted to recreate that in a fresh way. And we felt like focusing on a three-player co-op experience would provide a brand new sense of accomplishment with it.”
Time will tell if it eventually adds a Duos mode, so stay tuned. Elden Ring Nightreign launches next year at an unknown date for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
