Fable Could Slip to 2027 – Rumour

The decision is reportedly not due to "doom and gloom", but because Playground Games needs more time to work on the game.

While not too many details have officially been revealed about Microsoft’s action RPG Fable, the company has said that it is looking to release the title in 2026. A new report, however, reveals that it may not arrive in this launch window either. The report comes courtesy of Nick Baker on the XboxEra podcast, who said that sources have indicated to him that the release of Fable “may slip to 2027”.

Nick does, however, note that this push in the release window doesn’t come from “doom and gloom” about the project. Rather, the internal decision to push the game back comes down to the fact that the developers need more time to work on it.

“I don’t think Fable‘s next year,” said Baker on the podcast, which you can check out below. “My information is that it’s not going to be 2026. I’ve heard it from two different people now that Fable may slip to 2027. And that’s not doom and gloom, oh, there’s something wrong with the game. Problems. Just hearing that it’s taking a little bit longer than they expected.”

“It’s not about agreeing or disagreeing, I’ve had two different people tell me. One of them wasn’t from Microsoft. I’m hearing that it’s probably going to slip to 2027. Don’t get me wrong, I’m well aware of what will probably happen now. Someone from [developer] Playground will probably come out and go, ‘No, no, it’s next year.’”

While Nick is citing sources from within and outside of Microsoft, it is worth noting that, ultimately, these are simply rumours. Neither Microsoft nor Playground Games have made any announcements regarding the potential release window for Fable getting pushed back.

More recent rumours have indicated that Microsoft and Playground Games might be going for a multi-platform release for Fable. Alongside coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S, it’s allegedly making its way to PS5, which falls under Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy.

The original announcement of Fable getting a 2026 release window came about thanks to Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan, who said that the studio simply needed more time to work on the game. “What I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait,” he said, while also noting that news of the delay from 2025 to 2026 might not be what fans want to hear.

“The last two games [Forza Horizon 4 and 5] – critically acclaimed, award-winning, beautiful, played great,” said Duncan about Playground Games’ work on Fable. “And just what they’re bringing to Fable as a franchise, think of the visuals of what you expect of Playground Games, plus amazing gameplay, British humor, and Playground’s version of Albion – so inspired by what’s gone before with the franchise, but their take.”

“So really excited about the plans and really excited about the future, and I want the community to understand that we do these things for the best of the games and the teams, and ultimately that results in the best games, or the best game for the community.”
