Halo: Campaign Evolved Lacks PvP Because “We’re Not Trying to Replace the Original,” Says Producer

Instead, Halo Studios is "trying to basically make something that stands kind of shoulder to shoulder" with the original game.

As synonymous as Halo is with a memorable campaign, it’s equally iconic for its multiplayer. Halo 2 was pretty much the reason to purchase Xbox Live back in the day, and stood alongside Call of Duty as one of the multiplayer titans. And while its appeal has certainly diminished in later titles, the competitive scene remains as active as ever with Halo Infinite.

Unfortunately, it will have to continue relying on the 2021 shooter since Halo: Campaign Evolved won’t feature PvP. Halo Studios explained this omission in a group interview, which Windows Central attended.

“We’re not trying to replace what is a masterpiece in the original,” said executive producer Damon Conn. “We’re trying to basically make something that stands kind of shoulder to shoulder with it, using new tools, new energy, to get a little bit of a fresh take on some things, but honoring the legacy.”

Of course, it’s also important for the team to ensure that four-player campaign co-op is executed well alongside cross-play and cross-progression, especially with PlayStation entering the fold for the first time.

“So, yes, it’s a campaign experience, but it’s not only a single-player experience. And Halo has been always about reconnecting, a strong sense of community, and then also telling those stories and sharing those experiences together. And we believe that is where, you know, we’re really going to be able to bring people together with this new release.”

Granted, this is a remake, and Halo Studios may very well be saving its resources for the next mainline title (whenever that may launch). Nevertheless, it is somewhat underwhelming that PlayStation players won’t get to experience one of the most iconic components of the series for the first time.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launches in 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Head here to learn more about how the studio is leveraging Unreal Engine 5 while retaining the legacy code. You can also watch over 13 minutes of gameplay from The Silent Cartographer mission here.
