Battlefield Studios has released the second major update for Battlefield 6 Season 4. Dubbed Top Gun, the update brings along a host of new content, much of it as part of a crossover with the film franchise. Headlining the patch, however, is the reimagined return of the Wake Island map – a fan-favorite from the first-ever game in the franchise: 2002’s Battlefield 1942. Along with this, a free trial week for Battlefield 6 has also been kicked off. Check out the trailer below.
The Top Gun crossover event was developed by Battlefield Studios in collaboration with Paramount Games Studios, and has been described by the developers as the most elaborate seasonal event made for a Battlefield game so far. Players will get to interact with characters from the film – Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd, and Adm. Solomon “Warlock” Bates – all of them voiced by their original actors – Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman, and Charles Parnell, respectively.
A new squad unit has been added to the game – the CJTF Helix – that brings in many cosmetic items inspired by Top Gun to the game. To unlock these, players will have to clear Event Challenges to earn a limited-time currency called Ace Medals. Celebrating the event, a free week for the multiplayer shooter has been kicked off and will be live until August 25th.
As part of the event, new game modes have been added – Carrier Strike for Battlefield 6, and Fighter Sweep for REDSEC. The Carrier Strike mode pits two teams against each other with the ultimate goal of destroying the other’s aircraft carrier. In this mode, the carriers can take damage, and players will also have to figure out ways to get inside their opponents’ carriers to sabotage them from within. Fighter Sweep, on the other hand, is a Gauntlet mission designed for the free-to-play battle royale game, and tasks players with taking down enemy jets and destroying their munitions stockpiles across the map.
To aid players in these efforts, the update has brought along a pair of new vehicles – the F/A-81F Super Spectre jet and the F-74A Seacat jet, both based on their appearances in the Top Gun movies. They are both two-seat jets, which means that players will have to work together to fly them while also taking out enemy combatants. A new weapon has also been added to the game – the Interdictor sniper rifle.
The update’s Top Gun themes will play quite nicely with the reintroduction of Wake Island in Battlefield 6, since the massive map will need players to coordinate between land, sea, and aerial battles. The reimagined version of the map also features more naval warfare options, which were expanded on when Battlefield 6 kicked off Season 4 with the introduction of the Tsuru Reef map.
Battlefield 6 is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, and is slated to get quite a bit more content later in the year, including custom lobbies and a spectator mode. In a roadmap, Battlefield Studios has also confirmed that Season 5 for the shooter will kick off in the winter.
