Xbox Will Let You Digitize Your Xbox One and Series X Discs, Goes Live on August 31st for Insiders

While it hasn't been dated for everyone, the feature supports "thousands" of titles and grants digital entitlement at no cost.

Xbox disc to digital initiative

In an age where discs are less viable for publishers, Xbox has announced an initiative to convert physical games to digital copies. Available for Insiders to test on August 31st, it will support thousands of titles, including most Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles.

The system involves inserting the disc and then claiming the digital entitlement. From then on, you can access benefits like cloud gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere. The physical copy is still usable without any hang-ups, just as it should be in today’s day and age.

Of course, for those who have steadily built up a collection over the past decade or so, they won’t be able to digitize every single title. Xbox realizes this and will add more over time, though you still shouldn’t expect every game to be available when the feature launches.

When it will go live for all players remains to be seen, but as the first step towards game preservation – especially if Xbox decides to move away from physical media for Project Helix – it’s a pretty strong step. At least more so than PlayStation, which will stop manufacturing discs for new titles from January 2028 onwards and has offered no clarity on what that means for existing titles.
