It’s been more than a year since NetherRealm Studios announced that Mortal Kombat 1 wouldn’t receive any more new content. While it’s “pursuing” another entry in its popular fighting game franchise, there’s been total radio silence and no official announcements. So naturally, chief creative officer and co-creator Ed Boon took to Twitter to ask what the next game should be called.
“Mortal Kombat 2” was the favorite, beating out Mortal Kombat 13 and Mortal Kombat 12. Which is interesting because the first would indicate a direct follow-up to Mortal Kombat 1. Given the timeline reset after the events of Mortal Kombat 11, that seems a given, but another reboot may be unlikely.
Or so you would think. Boon addressed such notions, stating, “Some people are assuming the title with the most votes will determine where we take the story. That’s not the case. We’ve just had difficulty kounting lately…Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat X, Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat 1.” Is this another tease or simply misdirection? Boon could also be having fun at the fans’ expense, but at this point, it’s hard to say.
Regardless, and despite rumors of Injustice 3, NetherRealm isn’t moving on from the trials and tribulations of Liu Kang and friends anytime soon. Mortal Kombat 1 sold eight million copies, and the third film in the current series was confirmed last year. There’s also the whole bit about WB Games restructuring to focus on its biggest franchises, including Mortal Kombat, which likely wouldn’t have changed following Warner Bros. Discovery’s acquisition by Paramount Skydance.
