One of the few highlights of EA Play 2018 at E3, Anthem certainly looks like an empowering game, like Destiny with Iron Man suits and fun. When Gamereactor caught up with lead producer on the game, Cory Butler the day following the showcase, he had a lot to say about the team’s goals with the Javelins and how you’ll play.
According to Butler, the biggest goal with the javelins is allowing players to feel empowered. “You hover and fire, multi-mortars coming off of the Colossus’ shoulder, so it’s really just about that super heroic, larger-than-life… I’m swimming, I’m flying, I’m running, I’m jumping, I’m taking on colossal monsters or hordes of tiny creatures of humanoid scars; we really want you to feel like a badass.” Said Butler. The distinct abilities and weapons players can use, the different play styles that come with that and mobility of it all has the team hoping you come out of it feeling like a super hero.
Just in case you’re afraid that they’ve used that mobility as an excuse to leave the world rather empty, according to Butler, the team just isn’t interested in that and want to have a ton of density outside of the walls, keeping players popping off course from the objective marker to discover fun events and emergent moments. “Having lots of reasons to stop and check stuff out is super interesting.” Said Butler.
