Apple has just released sales figures for its App Store, which caters to iOS devices, stating that more than 40 billion apps have been downloaded till date.

The scary part? About half of those were downloaded last year itself, with December bringing in the most downloads at 2 billion.

Let that sink in for just a moment. The App Store, which has been around for roughly four years, saw half of it’s total lifetime downloads in a single year itself.

Insane.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services stated, “It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over $7 billion on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

Some examples include Temple Run, downloaded 75 million times in 2012, along with Backflip Studios’ DragonVale and Supercell’s Clash of Clans which combined earned a total of $100 million USD in revenue.
